A 38-year-old Porsche should not look new underneath. My job was to remove what did not belong so the car's real condition was easier to see.

This 1988 Porsche 911 came down from the Baltimore area to my studio in Leonardtown for a careful cleaning underneath. Nearly four decades of use had left buildup across the lower structure and suspension, hiding the surfaces and finishes below.

On a collector car, cleaning can turn into alteration faster than people think. I used dry ice so I could work in small, controlled areas without introducing water or leaving blasting media behind.

I photographed each area before and after the work. The underside of Bryan's 911 is now cleaner, and he has a clear record of its condition.

Each pair follows the same area of the car before and after cleaning. The goal wasn't to make this 911 look new. It was to remove years of buildup, preserve the original finishes, and give you a clearer look at the car underneath.

This is the kind of result I look for. The road film is gone, the edges are easier to read, and the original finish still looks like it belongs to a 1988 911.

The satisfaction here comes from uncovering the mechanical detail without erasing the years that made the car special. The metal is cleaner, but its history is still right there.

With the loose contamination removed, you can take in the engine, transmission, suspension, and exhaust as one honest mechanical picture. This is where the work starts to feel personal.

Most people will never see this wheel well up close. The owner knows it has been cared for, though, and that matters. Good detailing reaches the places that make a car feel worth keeping.

That is what makes this work rewarding. I get to spend time with parts of a car most people never see, learn what it has carried through the years, and return it to its owner cleaner and easier to understand. The age stays. So does the character.

The method

Controlled cleaning, zone by zone.

Dry ice cleaning works because the solid CO2 media strikes the contamination and sublimates into gas. There is no wash water and no blasting media left behind. The dislodged material still has to be managed, and the operator still has to make careful decisions around every surface.

Document

Record the condition and establish repeatable views before cleaning begins.

Calibrate

Adjust pressure, media flow, angle, and distance to the material in front of the nozzle.

Work by zone

Move methodically through the underbody, suspension areas, and adjacent components.

Record again

Photograph the same areas after cleaning so the work can be evaluated honestly.

What the result means

A clean surface is information.

On an older Porsche, the value of dry ice cleaning is not a manufactured “like new” finish. It is the ability to see and document the car with fewer layers of contamination in the way.

  • Original finishes, coatings, and visible age remain part of the car.
